These books resulted from three successive summer schools (ongoing for at least another 3-year series, being taught from these books; where soon problem sets will be available to complement the material in the textbooks). The Heliophysics books aim at the advanced undergraduate and starting graduate-level students, taking the perspective of heliophysics as a single intellectual discipline. The books touch on most branches of heliophysics, with particular emphasis on universal processes and on the multi-disciplinary character of many of its diverse range of specialties.
Online supporting materials including the problem sets and solutions, are available here.

The book presents the properties of the Sun, how it has fascinated humans for thousands of years and how it affects our society. The Sun is a perfect entrance to natural science, since it affects the Earth and humans in so many ways. Solar physics interacts with many other scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and meteorology to mention a few. The book provides a detailed introduction to the dynamics of the Sun. The book examines the many ways that the Sun impacts our world, including the beautiful northern and southern lights, and how greatly the Sun affects our technology-based society.
Our Explosive Sun includes 143 color illustrations and photos of the Sun, several of which were made especially for the book and have never been published before. Additional material, available via Springer Extras, includes a large number of animations and video material. A PowerPoint presentation of the book is a useful resource for teachers.
The book is written by Pål Brekke and based on his well known popular science lectures. It is a translation of the Norwegian version published in 2009. The English version has been updated with the latest images from SDO. A book like this is very welcome and a nice tool for promoting our science to the public. The book will also be available as eBook
This book about the international aspects and achievements of the “International Heliophysical Year (IHY) 2007” can be regarded as a compendium of the fertile impacts of conducting research in this field. The main focus, as the title implicates, is the international cooperation, which has emerged from this grassroots initiative. North and South, industrialized and developing countries have been coordinating their efforts and have been learning from each other in a mutual partnership under a joint understanding of sharing the scientific benefits. Through this, trans-border networks have been created and scientific as well as cultural exchange took place. Another focus of the book shows, how much astronomy contributes to the basis of knowledge society as today’s concept for mastering the future. Heliophysics has been and will be attracting large numbers of young people to enter an education and career in science and engineering. Such attractions we desperately need in all countries around the world, and we have to be glad about initiatives like IHY, which are successful in raising awareness, interest and fascination.

An outgrowth of the first Asia-Pacific Regional School on the International Heliophysical Year (IHY), this volume contains a collection of review articles describing the universal physical processes in the heliospace influenced by solar electromagnetic and mass emissions. The Sun affects the heliosphere in the short term (space weather) and in the long term (space climate) through numerous physical processes that exhibit similarities in various spatial domains of the heliosphere. The articles take into account various aspects of the Sun-heliosphere connection under a systems approach.
This volume will serve as a ready reference work for research in the emerging field of heliophysics, which describes the physical processes taking place in the physical space controlled by the Sun out to the local interstellar medium.
IAU Symposium 257 contains a collection of articles presented on 'Universal Heliophysical Processes', the unifying theme of the International Heliophysical Year (2007) which marked the 50th anniversary of the birth of space science. The focus of IAU S257 was on the universality of physical processes in the Solar System directly influenced by the Sun through its mass and electromagnetic emissions. The contributions deal with short and long term variability of the Sun: shocks, energetic particles, and magnetic storms directly linked to the mass emission, and climate effects due to the Sun's electromagnetic emissions. The discussion also includes topics such as the connection between solar mass emissions and galactic cosmic rays, as well as solar-stellar connections. This volume, assembling the diverse developments in space science of the past 50 years and the important topics of current interest, provides an invaluable summary for researchers in solar physics, and space and planetary science.
