BACKGROUND INFORMATION

An important agenda of ISWI is Capacity Building of instrument hosts in the field.  This has three main components: (1) Building their ability to maintain the instrument, (2) building their ability to analyze data from their instruments, and (3) building their ability to perform research (i.e., publish papers) based on (1) and (2).  Accordingly, the main purpose of this ISWI/MAGDAS school is to advanceCapacity Buildingwithin the African MAGDAS community.  The plan is to invite persons embarking on a career in space weather science.  Ideally, this will be one person from each African MAGDAS station who generally takes care of the MAGDAS magnetometer on behalf of SERC.  The organizers anticipate between 20 and 30 students.  The number of trainers will be about six.

MAGDAS hosts in Africa will be contacted directly by the co-organizers.  If you are not a host but are interested in participating (there is no participation fee but you must get to the venue on your own)
please contact

Prof. Yumoto ([email protected]) or Dr Rabiu ([email protected]) before 15 July 2011 .

THE 2011 ISWI-EUROPE SUMMER SCHOOL IN SPACE SCIENCE,
High Tatras, Slovakia, August 21-27, 2011
Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Tatranska Lomnica, Slovakia

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The ISWI is a follow-up activity to the successful IHY 2007 (that conducted many programs not only to popularise space science all over the world but also to create favorable conditions for joint research and training in some sort of global framework), but focusing exclusively on space weather. European scientists are successfully participating in the ISWI and many research level scientific instruments have been installed in many parts of Europe in the framework of the IHY and ISWI. In oder to make maximum use of these and other similar initiatives and establish strong space research groups in Europe, a high level training of young students and researchers is very crucial. The present summer school is a continuation of the African Regional ISWI School, which was conducted during October 28-November 4, 2010 in Ethiopia.

MAJOR TOPICS OF THE SCHOOL
  • Fundamental and Space Physics
  • Computational Space Physics
  • Solar and Solar-Terrestrial Physics

The main objective of this school is to increase the level of expertise of the students of RDC and Central Africa in order for them to participate and contribute to international programmes. Then the two important key points of this school are:

  • The ability to use already existing data sets and tools related to the Earth’s environment
  • The development and the use, by Scientists from RDC and Central Africa, of results connecting Environmental Sciences and sustainable development by using data from instruments ground-based as well as onboard satellites - for example for geophysical studies, telecommunications, etc...

This school will concern on data collected by the networks deployed in Africa in the framework of international projects as AMMA ( Multidisciplinary analysis of the African Monsoon), IHY ( International Heliophysical Year) and ISWI (International Space Weather Initiative).

Data from GPS, SID, Magnetometers, etc...
Tools : Data Base, Internet, GIS, Grid
