At the request of Dr. Hans Haubold (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, Vienna, Austria), I attach a 21-page Power Point presentation by Prof. K. Yumoto; it outlines Japan's role in ISWI.

Background:

United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (hereafter COPUOS) was first set-up in 1958 on an ad hoc basis, shortly after the launching of the first artificial satellite. This was done by the UN General Assembly with Resolution 1348 (XIII).

In 1959, the General Assembly established the Committee as a permanent body and reaffirmed its mandate in Resolution 1472 (XIV).

In 1959, the Committee had 24 members. Since then it has grown to 69 members -- one of the largest Committees in the United Nations. In addition to States a number of international organizations, including both intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, have observer status with COPUOS and its Subcommittees.

One subcommittee of COPUOS is the "Scientific and Technical Subcommittee", and it meets periodically. The 47^th session took place from 8 to 19 February, 2010, at the Vienna International Centre, Vienna, Austria. More info is available at: http://www.unoosa.org/oosa/

On Tuesday, 16 February, there was an all-day session on ISWI. It was at this session that the attached presentation was formally delivered by Professor Yumoto on behalf of the Government of Japan.
