[1] Message from the Executive Director of ISWI

Dear Space Weather Colleague,

The ISWI/SCOSTEP School on Space Sciences was held in Sangli, India during November 7÷17, 2016. The School was attended by about 80 students from Asia and Africa. Experts the USA, Japan, Norway, and India lectured at the school. Details including pictures will be published in the next issue of ISWI Newsletter.

Following the excellent workshop in Fukuoka, Japan, the next workshop will be held in the US under the name, “UN/US Workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative: The Decade after the International Heliophysical Year 2007” during July 31- August 4, 2016 in Boston College, Boston. The workshop will feature UNISPACE+50 activities in addition to highlighting the achievements in space weather studies over the past ten years. More details will follow soon. Save the Date!

The ISWI Steering Committee meeting will be held in United Nations, Vienna during January 31÷February 3, 2017. If any of the ISWI National Coordinators is interested in attending the meeting, please let me know, so we can arrange a badge. You may want to inform your permanent mission to the UN about your space weather activities, so they can inform the Science and Technology Sub Committee of UNCOPUOS.

An ISWI mini workshop on coronal mass ejections and solar radio bursts will be held in Mekelle, Ethiopia during February 20÷24, 2017. If you are hosting a CALLISTO instrument and interested in using it for research, then you should attend the workshop. Partial financial support is available. If interested, please contact Christian Monstein (monstein[at]astro.phys.ethz.ch) as soon as possible

[5] Report for "Space weather in Sudan" prepared by: Mohammed Yahya Alkenani November 2016

Introduction

This report covers local activities of the department of Astronomy and Space physics in ISRA which occurred in months ago. In this month we only plan to read the theoretical space weather so as understand much about this field by directing from Dr. Magdi and after that we will begin the practical report of space weather by the sensei Dr. Magdi Alfadil in Institute of Space Research and Aerospace to undertake capacity building for the space weather and technology applications for the Researchers of ISRA staff through training, research and development activities for sustainable development in space science. Astronomy and space physics department also serves as an activity center For ISRA. Particularly, it is tasked with the responsibility to promote space weather and astronomy at elementary and secondary school levels and to create awareness among the Sudan public for the benefits from forecasting space weather.
