ISWI Newsletter - Vol.6 No.020
19 February 2014

Dear ISWI Participant:

With great pleasure and pride, I announce that this issue of the ISWI Newsletter (which is published at the request of the United Nations) is Issue No. 500. I take this opportunity to thank Mitko (of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) for archiving all back issues at his ISWI website ( http://www.iswi-secretariat.org/ ). You can find all 500 issues at this website. This archive is the ongoing legacy of the Int'l Space Weather Initiative. And you are always invited to contribute to this legacy by sending in material to the editor (me).

I am just back from STSC Meeting of COPUOS in Vienna. I will have much more to say about this meeting in future issues. For today, there are two items:

[ Item 1 ]

The "2014 African Geophysical Society Conference" will take place 2nd-6th June 2014, in Abuja, Nigeria. Please find the announcement attached as the first pdf. The second attachment is for applying for support funds ---- the deadline is soon: 28 February 2014 !!!!

The AGS is extremely important for space weather research and education in Africa. If you are able, please throw in your big support for this scientific organization -- the "AGU" of Africa. If you are able, please travel to Abuja this summer and make a great presentation, or at least encourage young scientists. Inspire them. Help them. Stimulate them. Challenge them. Guide them. Transfer your knowledge to them. Reach out to them.

One of the goals of IHY was this:
... demonstrate the beauty, relevance and significance of space and Earth science to the world. [it is a worthy goal]

[ Item 2 ] Abstract submission started.

We announce that the abstract submission site of ICS-12 has now been opened at the ICS-12 web site. The deadline of abstract submission and financial support request is June 30, 2014.

title: The 12th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-12)
date: November 10-14, 2014
venue: Ise-Shima Royal Hotel, Shima, Japan
web site: http://www.stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp/ICS-12/

Tutorial Speakers (confirmed): Syn-Ichi Akasofu (UAF), Vassilis Angelopoulous (UCLA), Dan Baker (LASP)

Invited Speakers (confirmed): Slava Merkin, Stefan Kiehas, Iku Shinohara, Toshi Nishimura, Frank Toffoletto, Larry Kepko, Victor Sergeev, Lasse Clausen, Jesper Gjerloev, Steve Milan, Eija Tanskanen, Joachim Birn, Phil Pritchett, Pontus Brandt, Mike Henderson, Evgeny Panov, Jonathan Rae, Suzie Imber, and Barry Mauk

Over the half century since the first finding of the auroral substorm by Akasofu (1964), auroral and magnetospheric substorm has been one of the main topic for the scientists in space physics. Not only giving the spectacular auroral view, substorm contains various fundamental processes of plasma acceleration and dissipation in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. Recent satellite missions of THEMIS and Van Allen Probes as well as several modeling efforts are giving more insights into the relationship between the mid-tail plasma sheet and the inner magnetosphere and the relationship between substorms and storms. Extended ground imager, radar, and magnetometer arrays provide more complex dynamical features of the magnetosphere during subtorms.

Description of the Conference:

During ICS-12 we are going to highlight the most recent results in substorm research. Topical sessions may cover substorm processes in the tail, interaction between the tail and the inner magnetosphere and ionosphere, substorm currents and its dynamics, and the role of substorm in geospace energetics, as well as the role of MHD and kinetic instabilities in substorms. Other substorm-related researches are also welcomed, such as storm-substorm relationship, ULF/ELF/VLF waves, and non-Earth substorm-like features. Ample opportunity will be given for discussions on the new results.

SOC of the ICS-12 Olaf Amm, Eric Donovan, Mei-Ching Fok, Masaki Fujimoto, Karl-Heinz Glasmeier, Marc Lessard, Mark Lester, Rumi Nakamura, Yoshiharu Omura, Andrei Runov, Mikhail Panasyuk, Ondrej Santolik, Jean-Andre Sauvaud, Kazuo Shiokawa (chair), Dave Sibeck, and Xiaogang Wang

If you have conference announcements, please send them in to me for circulation in the ISWI community.

Cordially yours,
George Maeda
