ISWI Newsletter - Vol.5 No.57
10 May 2013

Dear ISWI Participant:

The dead line has been extended. Please see the message below from Dr Fabiano S. Rodrigues, Assistant Professor, The University of Texas at Dallas - UTD. This is a great chance to encourage promising young scientists to stay in our field of research and pursue new levels of excellence.

Note that the message below covers two separate awards: International and U.S. national.

Spring cheers from Kyushu,

Dear colleagues:

We urge you to nominate young colleagues for the International and U.S. National Sunanda and Santimay Basu Early Career Awards. The deadline for nominations has been extended to May 25, 2013. Below you will find detailed information for each Award. Please, feel free to contact the committee chairs if you have any questions.

1. Sunanda and Santimay Basu Early Career Award (New Deadline: May 25, 2013)

Established in 2008, the Sunanda and Santimay Basu Award in Sun Earth Systems Science is presented annually to honor an individual young scientist from a developing nation for making outstanding contributions to research in Sun-Earth Systems Science that further the understanding of both plasma physical processes and their applications for the benefit of society. The award is open to scientists who received their Ph.D. degree after 15 May 2006 and currently live and work in developing nations. Consideration is to be given to candidates who have overcome obstacles in attaining their research objectives.

The awardee will receive three years' membership in AGU; an award certificate; one complimentary ticket for the SPA section dinner; meeting registration, air travel, and living expenses (i.e., air travel and hotel room) will be provided to attend the Fall Meeting during the award presentation year; the opportunity to deliver an invited paper on the dissertation topic in an appropriate SPA session at the AGU Fall Meeting; and an Eos announcement.

    Nominations should include:
  • Nominator's name and title, address, and contact numbers;
  • Nominee's name and title, institutional affiliation, and address;
  • A statement - not to exceed two pages - of the action(s) or achievement(s) for which the candidate is nominated;
  • Two (2) letters of support from AGU members or from other recognized geoscientists belonging to institutions other than that of the nominee; and

This award seeks to recognize an individual early career scientist who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident within three years of obtaining a Ph.D. degree and for demonstrating scientific success in studying the plasma physical processes that couple Earth? atmosphere to driving mechanisms in the magnetosphere, solar wind, and Sun. The individual should show the talent needed to complete future work in those areas of space weather and their applications for the benefits to society.

This award is open to US citizens and permanent residents that have completed their PhD after May 15, 2010 by a US institution. The recipient will be invited to present a paper at AGU's Fall Meeting at an appropriate session and will receive a $1,000 cash award. The award will be presented at the Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA) Section? dinner so attendance at the Fall Meeting is mandatory.
