Dear ISWI Participant:

I attach for your perusal a Press Release (from the United Nations Information Service in Vienna) that is scheduled to be released this week. I do it now because the ISWI Newsletter office will be closed from May 29 to June 2, 2012.

It is being distributed through this newsletter in part for the following reasons. This explanation (below) is by Dr Hans Haubold of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The United Nations Programme on Space Applications is mandated by COPUOS and implemented by OOSA since 1971. The Programme's activities cover the fundamental disciplines

  1. GNSS [positioning, navigation, timing],
  2. space and atmospheric sciences
  3. remote sensing and GIS,
  4. satellite communication, and
  5. satellite meteorology and global climate

Since 1990, the UNBSSI has been implemented by the Programme for space and atmospheric sciences. The forthcoming "2012 UN/Ecuador workshop on ISWI" (see ISWI Newsletter Vol. 4, Number 56) is the 20th workshop for UNBSSI. The UNBSSI contributed to the establishment of the following:

  1. International Center for Space Weather Science and Education . (ICSWSE, pronounced "iku-sei"), located at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan,
  2. Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS), located at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria, and
  3. Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS), located at Pala, India.

Since 1988, as requested by COPUOS, the Programme has been extended by the establishment of UN-affiliated Regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education, located in India (Asia and the Pacific), Morocco (Africa, French language), Nigeria (Africa, English language), Brazil/Mexico (Latin America and the Caribbean), and Jordan (Western Asia). Through Expert Meetings, the Programme developed Education Curricula at the university level in all five disciplines. Regional Centres are organizing nine-month post-graduate courses and short-term activities in the five disciplines at the regional and international level. Regional Centres have contributed to ISWI with training activities. Regional Centres are acting as Information Centres of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The UN-affiliated Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology for Western Asia will be inaugurated as stated in the attached Press Release.
