Dear George,
Among the IHY/ISWI instrument arrays, we have GPS-Africa, SCINDA, and CIDR which are doing very important research work with the GPS signal for monitoring solar activity impacts on the ionosphere. Other IHY/ISWI instrument arrays, among them MAGDAS, are utilizing GPS for pnt (positioning, navigation, timing). Having said this we know that Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are themselves exposed to adverse impacts of solar activity. The attached report of the Royal Academy of Engineering (London, UK), titled Global Navigation Space Systems: reliance and vulnerabilities, refers in detail to GNSS and space weather and this report might be of interest to readers of the ISWI Newsletter. We also note with appreciation that the Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) co-organizes and co-sponsors the ISWI workshops 2010-2012.
