ISWI has conducted many programs not only to popularise space science all over the world but also to create favorable conditions for joint research and training in some sort of global framework. In the framework of IHY and ISWI, some research groups have been established in several countries. In order to establish the strong space research group, particularly in Asia-Oceania countries, a training to the young students and researchers is necessary. In the framework of this program, the Space Science Center of National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) is honored to host the 2012 ISWI and MAGDAS School in Space Science, the school to young solar physicists and geophysicists, to be held on 17-26 September 2012 in Bandung Indonesia. The present school is a continuation of successfully previous ISWI school conducted in Ethiophia on 2010, and in Slovakia on 2011. Its major objectives include teaching the fundamental knowledge and skills in :

• Fundamental and Space Physics
• Computational Space Physics
• Solar and Terrestrial Physics
• Space Weather
• Analysis of Space-based Data and Interpretation

This international school offers an intensive one week course in topics related to solar/solar-terrestrial physics, space weather and also 3 day school on MAGDAS as well.

The course is aimed at Ph.D. and Master students in Physics. A few young scientists in space and atmospheric sciences with an interest in Space Physics who want to pursue it further, may also be considered.

Accommodation

Organizing Committee supports air tickets for selected candidates from the country of origin and the city around Indonesia to Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport in economy class basis, including transportation to Bandung.

Accommodation for the students (including lodging and meals) during the school will be provided by Local Organizing Committee.

Selected candidates should prepare a notebook PC to attend the 2012 ISWI and MAGDAS school since lectures and other materials will be provided on-line during the school.

Visa Information

Participants who need an invitation letter to apply for a visa should inform the LOC as soon as possible by e-mail (see the contacts). The LOC will issue a letter, which should be presented to the Embassy of Republic of Indonesia or Consulate General competent for the country of their current residence when applying for a visa, to selected students and to lecturers.

Indonesia Government had granted visa on arrival favor to several countries to be able to purchase the visa on arrival facility upon their arrival in Indonesia's designed "International Gateway".

Los Alamos Space Weather Summer School
June 4 - July 27, 2012
Los Alamos National Laboratory

The summer school has been established to bring together top science students in space physics, planetary sciences, aerospace engineering, or a related field, with internationally recognized LANL scientists. Students will receive a prestigious Vela Fellowship worth $10,000 to cover relocation costs and living expenses. The program will include an exciting research project and daily lectures by LANL scientists.

Mentors and advisors may nominate their top graduate students. The program is open to all citizenships but students must be enrolled in a graduate program at a US university. Please see the website http://spaceweatherschool.org for further information.

The deadline for all application material is Feb 15^th, 2012. Applications will be reviewed by a panel and notifications of acceptance will be sent by March 1, 2012.

This summer school is sponsored by the Los Alamos Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP), the Principal Associate Directorate for Science, Technology and Engineering (PADSTE), and the Principal Associate Directorate for Global Security (PADGS).

The Space Weather School includes a wide range of topics:

Possible research projects include:
• PIC code simulation of whistler turbulence
• Solar energetic particle events
• Magnetospheric magnetic field during the substorm growth phase
• Third adiabatic invariant L* and radiation belt modeling
• Substorm injections and EMIC waves
• Scintillating and solid-state radiation detectors
• Thermospheric density and satellite drag modeling

Students – The program is open to U.S. and foreign graduate students in space physics, planetary sciences, aerospace engineering, or a related field. Program acceptance is based on the student’s academic record and nomination letter.
